The Power of a Word

It’s that time of year again. A new beginning. A fresh start. Time to choose my Word of the Year.

This year feels different than last year. Last year felt fragile and tenuous. For 2021, I chose a word to remind me of all the goodness and love and light in my life. I chose a word that would move me to be my best, most encouraging and positive self for others. Inspire! It was my touchstone whenever I allowed myself to get pulled back into the negative side of things. It helped me persevere when I just wanted to hide in my studio and tear paper. It gave me a purpose to make art and share ideas and hope. It was a good word.

This year, I’m ready for something different. I have a bunch of really big creative projects and events on my calendar. There will be a million little and big decisions to make in the next few months. I’ll need to stay flexible and strong. I’ll need to be able to change directions quickly if necessary. I’ll need to learn some new skills and work closely with others. I’ll need to learn to let go and trust that everything will work out just fine.

But that’s just part of it. This year, I want to do things I haven’t done in a long time. For one reason or another, I haven’t done a lot of things I used to love to do. Like singing and swimming and playing games. I haven’t ridden a bike in years. I haven’t danced.

So this year, my Word is Dance! I will remember all the things I loved to do and do them again. (with a few exceptions)

I’ll sing some old songs and learn some new dance steps. I want to be ready when my son gets married this summer!

Whatever Word you’ve chosen for yourself, or whatever Word has chosen you,

I hope you dance!

XO, Colleen
